The Eighteenth Century Ireland Society has awarded its first postgraduate and early career scholar bursary to Maria Zukovs (University of St. Andrews).
Maria’s research examines Dublin press coverage of the French Revolution from 1788 to 1794. It explores Franco-Irish relations in the 1790s from a new perspective, beyond traditional focuses such as the relationship between Revolutionary France and the Society of United Irishmen. It also examines their close economic ties through trade, which allowed the Dublin press to engage with the Revolution in a unique way.

When asked about how the bursary impacted her research, Maria said:
“The ECR bursary is allowing me to conduct key research that will help me turn my PhD thesis into a monograph. My thesis examined Dublin press coverage of the French Revolution from 1788 to 1794. The bursary is allowing me to take this further and examine the period in the latter half of the 1790s. Particular areas of interest will be the Rebellion Papers along with newspapers and other forms of print. This will hopefully allow me to create a more comprehensive picture of how the French Revolution impacted Dublin, through the lens of the press.”
The bursary, up the value of €2,000, may be used for the purpose of supporting archival research, the organisation of symposiums/conferences which are either wholly or substantially of relevance to studies of eighteenth-century Ireland, or publication expenses associated with a monograph or other substantial work of original research focused on eighteenth-century Ireland (article processing charges, etc.). The next bursary will be announced shortly.
