Can you tell us about #18thC artisan homes?

So, we know our readers are experts on eighteenth-century pubs but can you tell us anything about ‘artisan living’?  Here’s a query we received from a Creative Writing MA student…

I’m writing a story about a man from Geneva who settled with other Swiss watchmakers outside Waterford in and around 1783-5. They set up a small colony called New Geneva. Could you recommend any books about Irish ‘artisan’ living at the time, if there was such a thing. I’ve imagined the man as having his own cottage, with a living room and a little workshop in a separate room. I just need to know little details – would the floors have been beaten earth, was window glass common or very expensive? I’ve found a few books on furniture but none really on day-to-day living.

If you can help out with this query, enter your comments below or email [email protected] and I’ll pass on the message.
