This article examines transformation in the population of Dublin in the eighteenth-century from a mainly protestant city at the beginning of the century to a mainly catholic one at the close. Fagan discusses the various sources used to determine the city’s population between 1695 and 1798 and their usefulness. The number of parishes and their members is a decisive factor in determining the population of both catholics and protestants. Includes tables and appendices.
